Dennis and I explored the city some more, but wanted some much needed quiet time so he decided to take me to one of Hamburg’s beautiful gardens, Planten und Blumen. Boy, was I in for a wonderful surprise. Planten und Blumen isn’t just one garden, but has different gardens throughout each just as beautiful as the last. When you walk through the gate all you can see is colorful flowers from pinks to blues to purples.
Not going to lie, I thought it was so pretty that I face timed my mom while I was there to show her how amazing it truly was. It was nice to stop and smell the roses; I mean we did literally stop to smell the flowers. It was nice to have a bit of a get away from the fast paced city. Planten und Blumen ended up being one of my favorite places that we visited in Hamburg and is definitely a place I would love to go back to. Here are some of the many reasons to visit Planten und Blumen:
- It’s Free!
When you are on a college budget or any budget for that matter, free is always good! It doesn’t cost anything to be there in the gardens and it sure is a wonderful place to spend your day, especially if you pack a picnic to take with you. (By the way if you are over 18 you can drink in public places in Germany! Just a little reminder.) And you seriously can’t go wrong with free.
- It’s Super Easy to Get to!
You don’t need a car to visit this hidden treasure! You can get there by bus, train (metro), or bike depending on where you are and what you prefer! Dennis and I took the train because we were living in the Northern part of Hamburg. Taking any other method would take us quite some time to get there! Overall though, the train ride was a quick and comfortable. (And again it didn’t cost us that much!)
- Light and Water Shows!
In the summers they have a light and water show daily that are super amazing to watch. If you are looking for something to do at night, maybe after a date, a bite to eat, or before you go out, this is the place to go! They also have magnificent waterfalls throughout the gardens as well. Basically, it’s beautiful and is definitely worth the trip. (Also, did I mention it’s free?)
Planten und Blumen also has concerts throughout the year. I personally did not get to go to one, but I’ve heard from the locals it is definitely something you should consider going to. This is and event that does requires some pre-planning to know when the concerts are, but you can visit their website http://plantenunblomen.hamburg.de/ to find out when. This could also be a super cute date night, or a good time out with your friends! Either way you are sure to have a good time.
Even if you have never been ice-skating before it is for sure worth a shot because you will still have lots of fun even when you’re falling down. (Trust me, my first time ice-skating I fell a lot, but I still had fun!) This is another fun activity you can do if you go to Planten und Blumen in the winter because they also offer ice-skating. If this doesn’t get you in the mood for the holidays I don’t know what will. (And if you are lucky you may catch some snow!) Ice-skating at Planten und Blumen is also a pretty cost efficient thing to do in the city that is lots of fun for little money.
Overall, if you are visiting Hamburg you should stop by Planten und Blumen, whether it is for a light show, concert, ice-skating, or just a great escape it is worth going to! I’m so glad that Dennis took me to see it on our trip into the city. It is certainly a memory that I will never forget.
